Journalists are experimenting with different presentations of online news even though there isn't a lot of research to tell them whether such storytelling techniques work with news, or if they do, how and why. Researchers Nora Paul and Kathleen Hansen tested five online versions of stories about issues involved with using ethanol for fuel.
June 15th, 2010Nora Paul says she is not surprised by the backlash with Facebook and advised users to be extremely aware of how the systems work and what kind of information is being posted on the most popular site.
Mark your calendar for the next New Media Research @ UMN Conference on Thursday, September 23, 2010 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Murphy Hall Conference Center.
May 20th, 2010The Institute sent out a call for grant proposals to support new media research during the 2010 academic year. The research proposals needed to address some aspect of changes in new media technology, media consumption, or the impact of new technologies on storytelling and communications. Out of 20 proposals submitted, eight were funded.
March 10th, 2010Nora Paul will join Anthony DeBarros of USA Today, Laura Frank, Rocky Mountain Investigative News Network, Mark Horvit with IRE and NICAR, and Brant Houston of the University of Illinois in a talk about what computer assisted reporting-based investigations (CAR) are being missed. This roundtable discussion will not only look at what may be missed, but also how to discover those stories.
NICAR will be hosted by the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University on March 11-14.
March 2nd, 2010Journalists have a richer array of media available to use in storytelling than ever before. Is a complex story best told in 18 inches of well-crafted text or might an interactive graphic that lets people visually explore the story be more effective? Nora Paul will explore the vast array of multimedia and design tools at journalists disposal March 18 at 3M Auditorium, Carlson School of Management.
March 2nd, 2010The Institute seeks to support graduate student new media research projects during the 2010 academic year. The type of research projects sought will address some aspect of changes in new media technology, media consumption, or the impact of new technologies on storytelling and communications.
