How used by news business?

Not possible until various issues are resolved: lose the glasses, synchronizations issues, delivery issues, broadband, cumbersomeness of 2 cameras, synch zooms, screen vs. monitor, seamless software, ability to toggle from 2D to 3D (see future developments)

News uses: illustrative, explanatory--showing the mountains of Afghanistan experiential, providing an immersive environment connecting to the world--bring people to more personal experiences to bring community together.

Why for news?
For emotional access--to bring the news into people's own spaces. 3D photo ops for living rooms. 3D forces outside the news industry will drive & adopt the technology. Watch Hollywood & gaming.

Impact on audience?
Perception. 2D gives some distance. 3D brings the events closer. Possibility of some censorship of disturbing images, or warning tags for protection of public, disclaimer in sensitive situations. Children may be sensitive and have difficulty distinguishing image from reality. Need to understand impact on audiences: different kinds of news images. What is appropriate to present. Infotainment ratings of R, PG, etc. What will draw people in, what is compelling. Also accessibility issues and the fact that some people can't see it.

Impact on newsroom?
3D still needs craft and needs to bring personal interest. There are costs--different skills for photojournalists to train, understand well, similar to the switch from the darkroom to photoshop.

Impact on journalism education?
Anything to keep them awake! Could develop mock crime scenes Combine with 360--show students what they missed Positive impact on tech training Accessibility issues We thought 360 could be more useful at this point.

Research questions?
How 3D changes perception of the information received, not only emotional but also impressions of images. Impact on viewers/audience
What is the best way of viewing? and the amount of people who can view 3D.

Future developments?
One camera or device equivalent of split image Combination of 360 and 3D and also directional audio End-user glasses incorporated into monitor 3D plug-in that lives comfortably in a 2D world
