| New Media Research at UMN: An Interdisciplinary Conference on New Media and Internet Studies
Join the growing group of departments throughout the University of Minnesota engaged in new media / Internet research. From journalism and mass communication to computer science, from medicine to cultural studies and comparative literature, these are just some of the areas assessing methods and theories of the Internet and digital technologies in innovative ways within and across disciplines.
The University of Minnesota’s impact as a thought-leader in the multiple layers of Internet and new media research is being realized. The objectives of the New Media Research Conference are to:
- Showcase cutting-edge research being done here on campus
- Build a network of University of Minnesota researchers and scholars interested in examining new media and technology
- Foster interdisciplinary collaboration in creating and writing research proposals
- Publish a “state of the university” paper on new media / internet studies campus research
This year’s conference builds on the beginnings of the new media network created during last years New Media Research at UMN conference. In addition to the goals from last year listed above, this year we will promote the networking tools created by Aaron Westre (westr015@umn.edu) based on last year’s participants’ suggestions. The Network tools - a blog, wiki, and Google maps mashup - can be found at www.inms.umn.edu/network
As with last year’s conference there will be paper presentations, a poster exhibition and brainstorming sessions on collaborative research opportunities. We will also hear from various department directors and deans about the way new media affects their research agendas.
Susan C. Herring, professor of information science at Indiana University and editor of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication is the keynote speaker.
If you are a student (graduate or undergraduate) or faculty or staff member looking for colleagues interested in new media and new communication technologies research issues, please join us on Sept. 14-15, 2006.
