Charles Fairbanks is a graduate student in the University of Minnesota Department of Art.  He holds bachelor degrees in Art and in Science, Technology and Society from Stanford University.  His most recent project harnesses currents of signification created quasi-democratically over the Internet, via Google's image search engine.  With a computer program he created using MAX/Jitter, Fairbanks downloads a set of the top Google Image hits for various trenchant phrases and then averages select images into a visual composite.  The results are often telling portraits of the diversity, fortuity, and de facto hierarchies of the Internet.
